Leadership and Staff

Since 2019, the local research consortium includes the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), University of Southern California (USC), and New York University (NYU). A total of 480 men and women will be enrolled and followed over the project period. Participants are seen annually for the core study, which consists of a comprehensive interview covering medical history and health care utilization, psychosocial status, alcohol and substance use history, sexual behavior, food and material needs insecurity, and neurocognitive assessments. Bio-specimens are collected for immediate testing and for the repository for future studies. Participants also undergo a medical exam, pulmonary function tests, and echocardiograms, among other clinical assessments. In addition to the core study, the consortium also has a number of independent — though linked — ancillary studies that produce data available to the whole cohort.

University of Southern California Subsite

The Los Angeles WIHS site, originally funded in 1994, currently operates as a subsite of the SF CRS. USC enrolled 80 women with a focus on Latinx participants who were previously enrolled in the WIHS cohort. This collaboration incorporates the long-term experience of USC investigators in enrolling and maintaining a diverse cohort of women infected and at risk for HIV. The site is affiliated with the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center (LAC+USC) and the Maternal, Child and Adolescent Center for Infectious Diseases and Virology (MCA), which is situated in the HIV epicenter with the highest number of patients within its nearby neighborhoods.

The USC site is led by Dr. Andrea Kovacs, Director of the Maternal, Child and Adolescent/Adult Center for Infectious Diseases and Virology.
